Why is it important to test the flame color of the methanol without any compounds dissolved in it? So we can know the original color that might show though the other color's.
List the colors observed in this lab from highest energy to lowest energy. Blue, Green, then Red
List the colors observed in this lab from highest frequency to lowest frequency. Blue, Green, then Red
List the colors observed in this lab from shortest wavelength to longest wavelength. the shortest length is blue, then green, then red
What is the relationship between energy, frequency, and wavelength? The relation ship s that the faster the wave length , the more energy it has and with more energy it has a higher frequency. So all colors are going to be in the same order in any category
Based on the results of your experiments, what metal was found in your unknowns? Explain. Me and my partner decided it was borax because borax was the only metal we had that changed the fire green.
Do you think we can use the flame test to determine the identity of unknowns in a mixture? Why or why not? I believe o because then the fire will have multiple colors. so we will not be able to tell exactly, but get a pretty good idea.
Why do different chemicals emit different colors of light? This is due to the valance electrons that jump from the metal to the ground releasing a spectrum of visible of light as it jumps with speed.
Why do you think the chemicals have to be heated in the flame first before the colored light is emitted? they gain more energy from the heat so the electrons move faster and faster until they basically jump off.
Most salts contain a metal and a non-metal. Look at the compounds we tested and explain how we can be sure that it is the metal atoms that are responsible for the colors that you see. I am not sure. but i do make an assumption that since it is the metal atoms that have a lot of electrons concentrated that it is easier to set it off the reaction.
Colorful light emissions are applicable to everyday life. Where else have you observed colorful light emissions? Are these light emission applications related? Explain. yes. fireworks constantly use this to make such beautiful colors and creations. when the lit fuse reaches the metals and gun powder it catches the metals on fire while lighting the gum powder that send it across the sky.
Can you think of a way in which to use the flame test? Please describe below. The only way i can come up with to use the flame test is to impress people by tossing some small metals into a camp fire just to tell like a scary story.
Pre-lab Questions
What is making the color in a flame test? The metals burning
What color of light is the lowest in energy? Red
What color of light is the highest in energy? Violet
What color of light is the highest frequency? Violet
What color of light is the lowest frequency? Red
In chemistry, what is a salt? Metal components
How are electrons “excited”? When electrons are given energy and they launch themselves into the air releasing a spark of visible light.
What is a “ground state”? when all energy is transferred to the ground
In your own words, write a short explanation of how an electron absorbs energy and re-emits it as light and why different elements have different spectra. Because of the heat from the flame energy is emitted into the salt. this pushes the rest of the energy in the salt out. the color is determined by the amount of energy moving. more energy the more likely it will be violet, less energy though the more likely it will be red.
